The Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Troopy is one of the most iconic overland vehicles ever built. Known around the world as the Troopy, Bushtaxi, or Ship of the Desert, it has carried travellers across deserts, savannahs, and remote landscapes for decades.
We design this interior system for Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Troopy pop-up roof conversions to support real overland travel while respecting the rugged simplicity that makes the LC78 so trusted worldwide.
Our goal is to create a practical and durable living space that works in the environments where Troopies are most commonly used — from Australia and Southern Africa to the Middle East and Europe.
The system brings together the principles we focus on in every project:
With the pop-up roof raised, the interior comfortably accommodates two to four travellers, while still providing an emergency sleeping space for two inside the vehicle.
The layout integrates cooking and preparation space, flexible storage for gear, and compatibility with expedition systems such as water storage, electrical systems, heating, plumbing, and insulation.
At the same time, the design keeps the vehicle open and practical so travellers can enjoy the outdoor living space around the vehicle, while the interior remains organized and ready for the next stage of the journey.
The system is designed to withstand the vibration and conditions typical of long-distance travel on corrugated tracks.
We focus on simple, robust solutions that remain reliable after thousands of kilometres of remote travel.
Production time is between 4 and 5 weeks.
This system, like all our modules, is designed and manufactured in Italy.

Storage is key in the Troopy and we have designed the interior to give you plenty of that.
The standard setup comes with:
x3 Large Drawers each with a partition and with dimension 48 x 59 x 20H cm
x1 Lower Drawer with a partition and dimension 28 x 59 x 12H cm
x1 Long Drawer with two partitions and dimension 19 x 79 x 16H cm. Can be substituted for an open space to store your camping table.
x1 Bench storage with 3 hatches for access and total internal dimensions 25 x 100 x 47H cm
x2 open storage space under the central large drawers
x2 side open storage space facing the rear of the vehicle. Great for soft chairs, shoes and quick grabs.
x1 fridge space with a usable surface of 49 x 80 cm, big enough for many fridges up to 70 L.
x1 Electrical (or storage) compartment with ventilation and dimensions 52 x 25 x 47H cm
x1 Water and plumbing (or storage) trapezoidal compartment behind the seats with base dimensions 24 x 100 x 47H cm
Options include:
x3 MOLLE panels for diverse storage and gear organization
x1 Kitchen Unit Drawer with a partition and dimensions 38 x 46 x 16H cm
x1 storage space for oven and sink with and empty volume 42 x 85 x 19H cm

The layout is designed to create a practical living environment without turning the vehicle into a closed camper.
With the roof raised, the interior provides enough headroom and space for daily activities such as cooking, working, or relaxing during bad weather.
At the same time, the system encourages travellers to use the space outside the vehicle as their main living area, while the interior remains organized and functional.
This balance reflects how most Troopy owners actually travel: using the vehicle as a reliable base while spending most of their time outdoors.

The interior system is designed to support the practical needs of long-distance travel while remaining simple and durable.
Key design features include:

The diagram illustrates the overall layout of the LC78 roof conversion interior system and how the main components are organized.
The system is built around a central passage, allowing easy movement inside the vehicle while providing access to storage, cooking, and service compartments.
On the left side, the layout integrates the sink module and fridge slide, providing quick access to water and refrigeration. The sink basin measures 33 × 25 cm, offering a compact but practical washing area.
At the centre, a swivelling table functions as a work or dining surface and can also be integrated into the interior sleeping configuration when needed.
The right side is dedicated to large storage compartments, designed to organize expedition gear, tools, and personal equipment.
Overall system dimensions are approximately 190 cm long and 90 cm wide, while maintaining a 40 cm central passage for comfortable movement inside the vehicle.

Cooking is an important part of long-term travel.
The interior system includes space for preparing food and supports a variety of cooking setups commonly used in overland vehicles.
Possible configurations include:
The goal is to make meal preparation practical while maintaining a layout that works both inside and outside the vehicle.

Two material configurations are available: a rugged Raptor-coated black version with silver aluminum profiles, and a warmer bamboo version with black powder-coated aluminum structure.
BLACK RAPTOR WITH SILVER ALUMINUM STRUCTURE
This version uses marine birch panels coated with Raptor protective paint combined with silver aluminum structural profiles. The Raptor coating creates a tough, textured surface that is highly resistant to scratches, moisture, and heavy use, making it ideal for expedition vehicles.
BAMBOO WITH BLACK ALUMINUM STRUCTURE
This configuration pairs solid bamboo panels with black powder-coated aluminum profiles, creating a warmer and more natural appearance while maintaining structural strength.
The bamboo surfaces are treated with anti-mold protection and protective coatings to improve resistance to moisture and wear. The finish can be maintained over time using hydro oil, allowing small scratches or marks to be refreshed.
Both versions use the same modular structure and hardware, ensuring identical functionality and durability regardless of the finish chosen.

The interior system allows the installation of a wide range of expedition systems commonly used in overland vehicles.
The design accommodates:
The layout keeps these systems accessible for maintenance while protecting them from daily wear during travel.

The system includes the main structural components required to create the interior layout:

Expedition systems require regular checks and maintenance.
The layout allows quick access to electrical components, batteries, and storage compartments through top hatches and service openings.
Top hatches ensure you can reach the battery and electrical space to check wiring, fuses and all other gear.
The large storage compartment can be accessed both from the top (with two hatches) as well as from the central passage.
A small folding portable toilet can be stored here.
The water tank can be refilled utilizing the round opening.

The layout covers the entire length of the interior between the front seats and the back but leaves sufficient space for smart storage close to the rear doors as well as a comfortable position for the driver and the passenger.
The interior system is designed to keep weight low and evenly distributed across the vehicle floor, helping maintain the stability and handling characteristics of the Land Cruiser.
The Total Weight of the basic setup is approx. 100kg
The optional Kitchen Unit's weight is approx. 20kg (excluding the oven)

Some expedition components are not included so travellers can configure the system according to their own preferences and workshops can install the preferred equipment.
These typically include:
The system is designed for Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Troopy (LC78 / 70 Series) vehicles equipped with a pop-up roof conversion. No adaptations may be required depending on the roof conversion manufacturer.
Adaptations may be necessary to accomodate equipment already installed in the vehicle.
If you are unsure about compatibility, we recommend contacting us with details of your vehicle and roof conversion.
The system is designed primarily for vehicles with a pop-up roof conversion, where the additional headroom allows comfortable use of the interior space.
